If you rely on an external well for water, we don’t need to tell you how important that well is – along with its pump. Your well is only as reliable as the pump bringing that water out of the ground, and even the best-built pump will eventually start to see problems. It’s vital to recognize these problems as early as possible, so you can order pump repair – or a replacement – and keep the water flowing!
Keep an eye out for these warning signs, and don’t ignore them if you see them.
Four Signs You Need Pump Repair ASAP
- Low water pressure
Your water pump should provide a steady and reliable level of pressure, with the only dips happening if you have a lot of appliances or faucets running at once. Low pressure is one of the clearest signs of pump problems, specifically because there are few other issues that might cause it.
- Spitting, sputtering, or otherwise unreliable flow
Another big red flag is if there’s a lot of air in your water, causing it to spit and sputter whenever you turn on a faucet. This can easily be caused by problems with the pump drawing in air, especially if you know there is plenty of water. It could also potentially be caused by breaks in the pipes pulling in air, but broken pipes will generally tend to leak or else pull in contaminants like dirt.
- The pump runs consistently
Generally speaking, your pump should not be running all the time. It should be pulling enough water to keep your pressure tank stocked, then shutting off. If it’s running constantly, that’s another sign that it’s struggling to keep up with demand – and probably in need of pump repair, or replacement.
If you can’t watch the pump itself, keep an eye on your power bill. If it’s running constantly, it’ll cause a spike in electricity usage.
- No water at all
Of course, no water can be a sign of a broken pump. However, there are also a few other potential causes for this. The most common is a power disruption, so check your breakers and the power lines. There could also be a leak in the pressure tank or a major issue with the plumbing.
