A centrifugal pump is made up of several components, including a shaft and impeller that creates the force necessary to pump water. There’s also a mechanical seal installed directly behind its impeller to help prevent water from seeping into the machine components. However, sometimes, these shafts can crack or become damaged forcing the need for replacement. That’s why FloRight Pump & Controls has gathered some pump repair tips for you here.
To replace your centrifugal pump’s mechanical seal, you’ll need a PVC saw, a wrench, a new mechanical seal, and some PVC glue and primer. Let’s get started.
Step 1: Turn off your pump and power supply, then cut the plumbing connected to the pump with the PVC saw. Remove the pump and place it in a work area with ample room.
Step 2: Next, unscrew the bolts of the pump and its housing with your wrench, then remove the motor from the wet end of the pump
Step 3: Hold your wrench over the motor shaft tightly, rotating the impeller clockwise, then remove the seal from the back of the impeller and slide it off the shaft.
Step 4: Slide the new seal onto the shaft, taking special care not to touch the front of it with your fingers; body oil can damage mechanical seals.
Step 5: Hold your wrench firmly on the shaft to keep it from moving and screw the impeller back onto the pump’s motor shaft. Line up the motor with the wet end of the pump and screw it back together.
Step 6: Re-install your centrifugal pump and connect it to the plumbing with the PVC glue and primer. Be sure to let the pump sit for a day before turning it back on again, to ensure the seal is firmly in place.
