How A Preventative Maintenance Program Keeps Your Pumps Flowing Smoothly

Water Pumps Flowing Smoothly

From water treatment plants to golf courses, to home water supplies – if you have one or more large water pumps on your property, you undoubtedly rely on those pumps for day-to-day use. Modern water pumps are designed to run for many years with minimal problems, but costly breakdowns can occur – and a properly implemented preventive maintenance program helps prevent that!

Why Every Pumping System Needs A Preventive Maintenance Program

A preventive maintenance program gives you a way to stay on top of your pump’s maintenance by creating a solid plan for its care.
It’s all too easy for pump owners to get into a cycle of reactive maintenance – working on the pump after problems occur.  This can easily lead to a stack of minor maintenance issues that continually cause trouble, while the owner can never afford the time and effort to get them all taken care of at once.  The result is a pump that’s malfunctioning more often than not, or at least running well below optimal specs.
With a preventative maintenance program in place, this can be avoided, by staying on top of any minor issues before they cause actual problems.
A solid maintenance program includes:

  • An overall series of goals, such as increasing productivity or decreasing downtime, which are expressed with solidly achievable numeric milestones.  These should be hard KPIs, measured and tracked.
  • Commitment to the program from upper management, with appropriate budget support.
  • Hardware or software systems for monitoring pump performance and reporting any deviations from expected norms that could signify a maintenance issue.
  • Trained technicians capable of recognizing these deviations and tracing them back to the source.
  • Long-term data tracking and reporting, to search for larger trends and better optimization strategies.

A preventive maintenance program can be tough to implement at first, but over the months and years ahead, it will pay for itself many times over.
